At the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, there are multiple ways to report sexual violence or misconduct. One of those options is reporting sexual violence to the police. Always call 911 in an emergency, or call 217-333-8911 in a non-emergency to reach the Champaign County dispatch center to be connected with a police officer who can speak with you.

The University of Illinois Police Department has several officers with specialized training in responding to sexual assault and domestic violence. These officers are equipped to investigate cases of sexual misconduct and connect survivors with appropriate support resources. Our investigators use trauma-informed interviewing techniques to help survivors recall details about an incident in a way that is sensitive to the difficult emotional impact.

UIPD also has a Special Victims Unit (SVU) that takes a victim-centered approach to incidents involving sexual assault, dating violence, and domestic violence. In addition to conducting thorough investigations, SVU officers help survivors develop personalized safety plans and connect them with university and community-based support services.

How to get an order of protection

If you are the victim of a crime, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign will give you information about how to obtain a state-issued order of protection. To get started, you can contact the University of Illinois Police Department.

Alternatively, you may contact the Women’s Resources Center, Rape Advocacy Counseling & Education Services (RACES) or Courage Connection to ask for assistance.

How we can help

Any member of the campus community who files an Order of Protection is strongly encouraged to notify University Police. As warranted, campus units are strongly encouraged to notify the University Police when they become aware of an order of protection or a situation involving intimate/domestic partner violence.

Here’s how University Police can assist someone who files for an order of protection:

• The University Police will work with the affected individual and assess any safety concerns.
• The University Police may assist in creating a safety plan.
• Depending on the situation, University Police may contact the appropriate Threat Assessment Team and convene its membership.
• If a situation arises to the threshold of being “activated” (by consensus of the appropriate Campus Threat Assessment Team), a Point of Contact is assigned and an action plan is developed.
• Ongoing developments will be periodically reviewed until the situation is “deactivated.”
• The Title IX Coordinator may become involved.
